De Leon: New Internet slang words to know now

Patrick Joven S. De Leon

IT’S been a while since my last hello here. Even more that I’ve realized that the world changes and moves on faster than we know.

Hence, to catch up and better appreciate the Internet lingo, let’s get updated with some of the new slang spreading in both net and real life.

JOMO - This acronym stands for joy of missing out. (the opposite of FOMO or Fear of missing out) which means the gratifying emotion of saying no to a few social interactions, unplugging, and just guiltlessly enjoying some time on your own.

Example: It's a hard pass for me on Poblacion night. I'm gonna JOMO this weekend to unwind.

Flex – a word is used when someone's bragging or gloating on social media.

Example: (Caption for a social media post) “Flex ko lang po yung mga kaibigan kong mahilig sa samgyupsal.”

Gassed – a word that refers to people who are too full of themselves.

Example: Okay. Gets! Everything's great; so no need to sound so gassed up, though.

Ghosting – a word used when someone leaves you hanging, disappearing out of thin air without explanation or closure.

Example: My boyfriend hasn't been messaging me for a week. Is he ghosting me? Am I single now?

Sana all - a term that is used by Filipinos to wish for an individual's success or luck to spread to other people, mostly barkadas.

Example:

Man 1: I won the lottery yesterday.

Man 2: Wow, sana all!
