FOR working students or for workers who have not finished college yet, the thought of balancing academics and a job may seem very challenging. The demands of schooling combined with personal responsibilities would probably make going back to college to get that dream degree a tough decision to make.

It is undeniable that earning a college degree will present a lot of opportunities in the future, but one cannot ignore the present realities that made him defer his studies. In order for one to get back to college, he will need a school that understands and supports a working student’s needs.

Here are some tips that one may consider to ease his college experience as a working individual:

Going to universities that allow one to study at his own pace. To working students, nothing is as valuable as time. For them to be able to attend to all their tasks, they need to be able to manage their time.

The good news is there are universities that offer programs with teaching and learning activities that one can tackle at his own pace. Programs that are designed to have asynchronous learning delivery, wherein one is not required to have real-time interaction with professors and classmates, will allow one to perform all academic tasks at a time that best suits his schedule. One will never worry about his studies interfering with other responsibilities.

Opting for accessibility. Another thing that will help one in managing his time as a student is accessibility. One should look for programs that will allow him to access content, learning tools and courseworks online, anywhere. One will not need to be on campus for lectures, research and exams.

Finding a support system. Being a working student can be overwhelming, and at times, one will need assistance. There are universities that offer remote student services and have advisers for all matters related to schooling such as enrollment, career opportunities and transactions with various departments.

Enrolling in an online degree program. Fully online degree programs offer a wide range of advantages compared with their traditional counterparts, including those mentioned above. Fully online programs can also cost less since there are some miscellaneous fees and other school-associated costs are eliminated such as board and lodging, transportation and fuel and even allowances.

As remote learning and fully online education become the new norm, universities have found ways to make the learning experience more enriching for students, assuring them that the quality of education in fully online programs is the same as in traditional on-campus programs.

Mapúa University is one of the schools in the Philippines that offer fully online bachelor’s degree programs that are suited for working students and working individuals who wish to go back to school.

To date, Mapúa offers six Commission on Higher Education-approved fully online bachelor’s degree programs in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology. These programs give students the flexibility of “anytime, anywhere” education.
