Leyte village chief gunned down

A BARANGAY captain in Alangalang, Leyte was shot dead by riding-in-tandem gunmen on Sunday, March 17.

Police identified the victim as Virgilio Vergara, 62, the barangay chairman of Buri in Alangalang.

His wife, Corazon, was wounded in the attack.

Initial investigation showed that the couple was on board a motorcycle and headed for Barangay Cogon when an unidentified assailant on board a motorcycle suddenly appeared and shot the victims around 5 p.m.

Vergara sustained gunshot wounds on the different parts of his body, resulting in his instantaneous death.

Vergara's wife sustained a gunshot wound on her left breast and was brought to Tacloban City for medical attention.

The Alangalang Municipal Police Station are conducting a follow-up investigation and pursuit operation against the assailants.

The motive in the incident has yet to be established. (SunStar Philippines)
