Gunmen attack police, medical personnel convoy in Samar

A GROUP of gunmen attacked a convoy of police and health personnel from Calbayog City along the national highway of Barangay Lale, Pinabacdao, Samar Tuesday, July 27, 2021.

The personnel were conducting convoy security heading towards the Department of Health (DOH) Regional Office-Western Visayas in Palo, Leyte to get Covid-19 vaccines that were supposed to be administered to the people of Calbayog upon its arrival at the City Health Office, according to the Police Regional Office-Eastern Visayas.

Upon arriving at the said area around 1 p.m. Tuesday, the personnel heard a sudden burst of gunfire, followed by an explosion some twenty meters behind the patrol car.

“While the incident recorded no casualty and damage, all concerned units were alerted to heighten its security measures,” the police regional command said in a statement.

Brigadier General Ronaldo De Jesus, police regional director, also condemned the incident.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit team of Samar Police Provincial Office recovered from the area an electric wire, fired cartridge of 5.56 mm, and PVC fragments.

Authorities are investigating the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
