Soldier drowns while training in Northern Samar

A 30-YEAR-OLD soldier died while in a Water Search and Rescue (Wasar) training in a private resort in Las Navas, Northern Samar on Sunday, November 21, 2021.

The victim was identified as Corporal Ian Bacaycay, married, assigned at the Philippine Army’s 20th Infantry Battalion, and a resident of Barangay Payahan, Calbayog City, Samar.

Initial investigation disclosed that the Army troops were on a lunch break when they noticed that the victim went back to swim at 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

A fellow soldier noticed somebody under the water and later found out that it was Bacaycay, police said in the report.

A designated personnel immediately applied first aid and CPR to the victim.

Bacaycay was brought to Catubig District Hospital on board a military ambulance but he was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Shiela Myr Tentativa, the attending physician.

Authorities are investigating the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
