TWO policemen from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Barmm) were arrested for alleged involvement in the killing of a mechanic in Zamboanga City, an official said Saturday, March 28.

Police Captain Edwin Duco, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) information officer, identified them as police staff sergeants Meldin Jawadil and Russel Appang.

They were tagged as the ones responsible in the killing of Willy Jumaani, 38, around 5:30 a.m. Friday in front of a mosque in Cabatangan Village.

Duco did not mentioned the specific place as to where they are assigned except in saying “in the Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi (BaSulTa) areas.”

He said the two were arrested around 8 a.m. Friday at the Police Station 7 headquarters when one of the witnesses, Junsin Jumaani, recognized Appang as the gunman.

Duco added that the two went to the Police Station 7 to verify the status of Barangay Protection Order filed against Appang.

He said a motorcycle was recovered at the residence of Jawadil in a follow-up investigation, which was also identified by the witness as the getaway vehicle of the suspect during the incident.

The victim was fetching water to a mosque around 5:30 a.m. Friday, when the suspects riding on a motorcycle appeared and repeatedly shot the victim.

The suspects, who were wearing face masks and crash helmets, sped off after the incident.

Duco earlier said the victim, who owns a motor repair shop, has no known enemy in the community. (SunStar Zamboanga)
