Navy official dies in gun attack

A PHILIPPINE Navy official was killed while his companion was unscathed in a gun attack on the eve of the election in Zamboanga City, the police reported Monday, May 13.

The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) identified the victim as Navy Captain Nestor Yapit, 53, a resident of Sangley Point, Cavite City.

Yapit is the current provost marshal of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (Navforwem).

Unscathed was Roselyn Omar, who was with Yapit at the time of the incident around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 12, along Veterans Avenue near the exit of the Zamboanga City Medical Center.

Investigation showed the victim was about to board his vehicle when shot by a lone gunman.

The gunman fled after the victim fell on the pavement.
