THE University of the Philippines-National Center for Transportation Studies has been commissioned by the local government to conduct a transportation and traffic management study amid the mounting traffic problems besetting Zamboanga City.

Dr. Jose Regin Regidor said the study is aimed to address various issues and concerns regarding transportation and traffic in the city.

Regidor said the project will run for seven months starting this December.

The project will involve the conduct of data collection exercises, including data collection on traffic, public transport operations, road safety, as well as parking and other data such as inventory of traffic and road signs and road mappings.

He said public consultations will also be held, with a traffic summit being planned for January 2020.

Regidor added they will also review and assess the city's comprehensive land use plan, comprehensive development plan and the local public transport route plan for public transportation services.

Assistant City Administrator Cesar Raz said the transport study is also expected to provide inputs for the proposed traffic code, smart shuttle service plan-routes and fleet size, pedestrianization plan of the central business district, traffic impact assessment protocol, tricycle route plan and proposed tricycle ordinance, long term visions (15 years) and medium term goals (5-10 years) for the urban transport system with performance indicators.
