THE Department of Agriculture (DA) vowed to support the Enhanced Countryside Development Program of the Cebu Provincial Government by establishing more swine breeder farms for hog production and fattening under the agency’s National Livestock Program.
The DA can provide support like fencing, housing, feeds, veterinary drugs and biologics, and equipment.
In a courtesy call on Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on Thursday, July 15, 2021, Agriculture Undersecretary for Livestock William Medrano cited Cebu Province’s “green zone” status, which represents Cebu’s position as it remains free from the African swine fever (ASF) virus.
DA confirmed the first ASF outbreak in the country in July 2019. Cases have been reported in Luzon, Mindanao, Leyte, and Samar Islands.
“Nasa ‘green zone’ pa kayo. We really encourage all investors, our swine farmers, our swine raisers, to enhance their production level to increase the supply of live hogs coming from Cebu,” Mendrano said.
