SEVEN convicts who were released under the controversial good conduct time allowance (GCTA) Law have surrendered themselves to police in the province.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Acollador, Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office Deputy director, said of the seven who have surrendered, one from Himamaylan City has already completed the service of his sentence, while another one from Cadiz City also yielded although the convict stated he forgot the nature of his release and failed to present his documents.

Four convicts from the La Carlota City, Silay City, Hinoba-an, and La Castellana have already been referred to the Negros Occidental District Jail, while the convict who surrendered in the town of Calatrava has been directly referred to the Bureau of Corrections.

With the deadline was set for tomorrow, the police official has again appealed to the remaining 55 convicts in Negros Occidental to surrender.

Last week, Police Regional Office (PRO)-Western Visayas spokesperson, Police Lt. Colonel Joem Malong, said they will conduct an “Oplan: Tokhang” for convicts who were released early for “good conduct.”

Malong warned convict who fail to surrender will be subjected to police operations once the 15-day ultimatum given by President Rodrigo Duterte expires.

The good conduct law recently came to light after it was revealed convicted rapist-murderer Antonio Sanchez, former mayor of Calauan, Laguna, was set to be released prematurely as beneficiary of GCTA. (TDE)
