Bacolod eyes satellite markets

Merlinda A. Pedrosa

THE City Government of Bacolod is planning to put up two satellite markets to accommodate some of the displaced local vendors, its top official said.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia said there are available city-owned properties in Barangays Alijis and Mansilingan that can be used for the establishment of markets.

Leonardia said they already created a committee to study the possible creation of satellite markets in these barangays.

The mayor also talked with the barangay officials to facilitate the implementation of the projects.

The city, he said, is doing its best to find new markets for the vendors.

"Bacolod is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Philippines today. We are expanding and soon we will have other growth areas," Leonardia added.

The City Government started Wednesday, August 28, the demolition of illegal structures of the sidewalk vendors at the downtown area.

This is in compliance with the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to rid public streets of obstructions to facilitate the orderly use of thoroughfares.

Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, cluster head on markets, earlier said about 400 sidewalk vendors will be transferred inside the Bacolod Vendor's Plaza near the Manokan Country.

The affected vendors are those from Araneta Street, Gonzaga, Gatuslao, Luzuriaga, San Juan and Bonifacio streets.

They are on top of the hundreds of vendors surrounding Libertad and Burgos Public Markets, which were demolished and transferred inside the markets last week.

The demolition of illegal structures is also in pursuant to Memorandum Circular 2019-121 of the Department of the Interior and Local Government directing local government officials to implement the clearing of roads.

The memorandum stated that within 60 calendar days, significant results must be achieved, documented, and reported together with the efforts of the local government units to sustain the same.
