BACOLOD City Councilor Renecito Novero has expressed his support to review the Department of Education’s (DepEd) K to 12 program.

Novero, chairperson of the city council committee on education, said Wednesday, November 13, that he’s in favor of the review of the K to 12 as long it is total review including the issue on whether it is necessary or not.

“Our national legislators including the President should look into the wisdom or unwisdom, practicality or impracticality, necessity or unnecessity of adding two more years to the burden of the parents and stealing two years from the future of the child,” he said.

Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano earlier said that the House will review the status of programs and policies under the DepEd K to 12 program so that its achievements and challenges in policies can be identified.

He said that many schools still lack equipment, whether it’s automotive, electrical or sports.

“So there are issues that we have to address” he added.

K to 12 is an education system under the DepEd to enhance learners basic skills, produce more competent citizens, and prepare graduates for lifelong learning and employment.

The K to 12 program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education, six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School.

Novero said the Senior High is two years and it’s applicable and mandatory for all students who will enter college.

“For me, it’s impractical, unnecessary, unreasonable and unbeneficial to our students. So my suggestions for all the legislators is to consider the totality of the issue of the K to 12 program including the issues financially, technically, professionally, and vocationally,” he said.

Novero revealed that he has a son who underwent senior high and most of his schoolmates aired their sentiments that it’s useless for them.

He said he’s in favor for the abolition of K to 12 program. (MAP)
