DENGUE cases in the Negros Occidental capital city have dropped by 19.5 percent in February 2022 compared to the same period last year, records from the Bacolod City Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (BCESU) showed.

Dr. Grace Tan, chief of the Environment Sanitation Division of the City Health Office (CHO), said the city recorded 33 dengue cases with only one fatality as of February 26.

This was lower than the 41 dengue cases with two deaths logged during the same period last year, she added.

BCESU records also showed that Barangay Singcang had the highest number of cases with six, followed by Barangays Mansilingan with four, and Granada, Cabug and Mandalagan with three dengue cases each.

Barangays Alijis, Estefania and Banago have two cases each while Barangays 14 and Tangub recorded one case each, it added.

Tan said they are continuing their campaign to combat dengue by encouraging Barangays to do the enhanced 4S: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; Secure self-protection measures; Seek early consultation; and Support fogging.

Tri-media campaigns, distribution of larvicides, and spraying and fogging in barangays and public places are also being rolled out, she added.

Meanwhile, only one leptospirosis case was recorded in the city as of February 26, 2022.

The 48-year-old male resident died after he reportedly waded in flood water in Kabankalan City after Super Typhoon Odette.

The distribution of mouse traps, information drive regarding rodent control and management of leptospirosis, the availability of Doxycycline for prophylaxis of leptospirosis and the campaign for proper solid waste management are likewise being conducted to prevent the spread of leptospirosis.
