A POLICE trainee who was undergoing a training at the Regional Training Center (RTC) in Bakyas, Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City, died on Wednesday, October 10, after suffering from a seizure caused by oxygen deprivation.

Police identified the fatality as Frenz Galen Frades, 22, of San Jose, Antique. He was a member of Public Safety Basic Recruit Course (PSBRC) Class 2018-01 and was staying at the RTC for a six-month training.

Chief Inspector Ramel Sarona, head of Police Station 7, said the police trainees just finished their physical exercises on Tuesday night, October 9, when Frades approached the duty tactical non-commissioned officers that he was not feeling well and that he felt dizzy.

Frades was rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he expired the following day at 11:45 a.m. due to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) status epilepticus.

According to cerebralpalsy.org, HIE is a brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain, also commonly known as intrapartum asphyxia.

Status epilepticus is when a seizure lasts longer than five minutes or when seizures occur close together and the person doesn't recover between seizures, based on the definition of epilepsy.com.

Frades was among the 647 newly-recruited Police Officers 1 (PO1s) of Police Regional Office (PRO)-Western Visayas, who took oath in Iloilo City Monday, October 8. (GYM)
