More teachers' seats on GSIS board urged

Sunnexdesk

MANILA--Senator Ralph Recto wanted more seats for teachers on the board of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), citing their more than 40 percent membership in state-run pension agency.

Recto said teachers make up around 600,000 of the 1.4 million members of GSIS, a number that is expected to grow each year.

He said greater representation will give teachers "the necessary voice to air their grievances against the persistent allegations of inefficiencies and irregularities in the processing of claims and benefits of members."

Recto, who wants to amend the GSIS Act to allow the additional seats, said he filed his bill because of numerous complaints over slow processing of GSIS claims and the inefficiency in recording of members' contributions.(Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
