THE Aquino government has no plan to allow again graduates of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) to join the Philippine National Police (PNP), Malacañang said Wednesday.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda issued the statement after PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac reportedly said that the PNP was considering hiring graduates of PMA.

"Let me emphasize, there was no categorical statement from the PNP, and we have not that -- we have not seen that option," he said in a press briefing.

Lacierda said he clarified the issue with Sindac, who denied of making such statement.

"That’s why I had to ask the person who allegedly made that statement, and he categorically said he never advocated that position that… And neither do we; we have not seen any stand to that effect," he said.

He said the PNP leadership has no official stand on the possibility of bringing back PMA graduates to the PNP.

Lacierda noted that under the Constitution, there should only one police unit that is civilian in character.

PMA graduates automatically join the military. The government has its own school for those who want to be a policeman, the PNP Academy in Cavite. (SDR/Sunnex)
