Negros Occidental Board lauds Nietes on new boxing feat

Carla Cañet

THE Provincial Board of Negros Occidental, presided by Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, passed on Wednesday, January 16, a unanimous resolution, congratulating Donnie "Ahas" Nietes, the new World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight titleholder.

Nietes recently won against Japan's Kazuto Ioka.

Nietes is a native of Murcia, Negros Occidental.

"As a Negrense, we should be very happy and wished him well and good health and more success as we also heard him challenged the bigger guys or those boxers who hold championships in another division," Lacson said.

Palaro

Meanwhile, Lacson said the Provincial Government made their bid to be the host of the Palarong Pambansa in 2021, which will be held in the Visayas region.

The Selection Board will be sending its representative to validate and inspect the areas mentioned in its bid documents.

They will check on the billeting area and playing venue and after that, they will make their announcement on who will host the 2021 Palarong Pambansa.

There were only two bidders, the provinces of Negros Occidental and Capiz.

"As far as the readiness of the province to host it, there is no question about it. In fact, they said it many times that they know Bacolod and the capacity of Negros. But you know, Capiz has never hosted any Palarong Pambansa and they might want to spread that opportunity to other provinces. We must bear in mind that Negros Occidental has already hosted Palarong Pambansa four times already. But as far as readiness, we are ready and I am sure that they were also impressed with our presentation," he said.
