IN A bid to improve traffic flow in Baguio City, plans by Joseph Claridades will be set into place.

The council on Monday passed on final reading the adoption of the Claridades’ “Smarter Roads” proposal setting in motion traffic plans for the city.

Councilor Mylen Yaranon who chairs the committee on public works is bent to help ease congestion in the city and has advocated for the adoption of the Claridades plan.

Claridades in his proposal listed major changes in the traffic system like the imposition of “no stopping” within 10 meters before and after intersections, reduction of the number of one-way streets at the central business district, the strict implementation of public transport stops or loading and unloading zones and identification of new pedestrian crossings.

He also advocated maximizing of the use of police resource to direct traffic in some intersections and the promotion of “traffic calming” at the central business district and some highways.

Claridades also called for the implementation of modern roundabouts at crucial intersections, transit lanes, self-enforcing road markings and the sharing of information on new routes via applications Google Maps, Waze and others.

He also proposed the use of thermoplastic paint for all road markings.

Yaranon said the plan will be under the traffic division of the City Engineer’s Office headed by acting City Engineer Victorio Olpindo.

Claridades will be working for a newly formed traffic division created by the city under tasked to study the road network of the city and will be the primary implementer of the smarter road ordinance.

Olpindo said the plan will be studied and implemented anew to gauge which aspects will be doable in the city.

The city engineer said the newly created traffic division now has only two personnel and its budget as well as that of the Claridades’ proposal will be set this year for implementation for the following calendar year.
