Cordillera on red alert due to 'Jenny'

Jonathan Llanes

THE Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) has raised the red alert status in the region because of Tropical Storm Jenny.

The move came after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration reported that as the center of Jenny was estimated at 395 kilometers east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 525 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte as of Tuesday, August 27.

All provinces in the Cordillera, including Baguio City, were earlier placed under storm signal number 1.

DRRRMC members and local DRRM councils are reminded to ensure and discourage unauthorized mining activities in the region, conduct pre-emptive evacuation of families whose houses lie within dangerous slopes particularly near ground zero, and conduct inspections of footbridges along rivers and tributaries to ensure safety of its users.

The DRRM council also reminded its members to ensure that the designated evacuation centers are ready to accommodate displaced families in case of pre-emptive evacuation, the placing of warning signs along danger areas, the utilization of emergency warning systems such as public address systems, short messaging system, social media, radio stations, and text blasts to ensure a wider dissemination of timely weather and safety advisories to the public.

The CDRRMC and local DRRMCs are also tasked to continuously conduct monitoring in their areas of responsibilities due to the cold weather and isolated rains, and to advise residents, especially those living in areas identified to be at risk of flooding and landslides, to take precautionary measures and to coordinate with their local DRRMCs while continuously monitoring the tropical storm.
