Further study sought on Session closure

THE TRAFFIC Enforcement Unit (TEU) of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) is seeking further study on the experimental weekend closure of Session Road in preparation for its pedestrianization.

BCPO-TEU Chief Police Major Oliver Panabang said they will study the scheme and look at ways on how to ease traffic in the central business district after the suspension of the proposed Session Road closure on August 3.

The weekend closure is experimental which hopes to revitalize the environmental condition of the central business district.

“Personally, I would suggest to really study the proposal to close a portion of Session Road during weekends. Although, we have prepared a traffic plan. There will be a portion from lower Session Road until Mercury at the upper portion (that will be closed) while vehicle movement will be possible along Governor Pack, Father Carlu and General Luna-Bonifacio,” Panabang said.

Based on the proposal, vehicle coming from Calderon Street are not allowed to enter Session Road while those coming from Mabini Street can pass thru going to Harrison Road.

In a survey conducted by BCPO, some 16,000 vehicles pass through Session Road daily.

“What I envision as a long term solution, if possible, is for the provision of enough parking spaces. But this is just one possible solution. It does not mean that just because we have parking spaces which may accommodate big volume of vehicles, this would entirely solve the traffic problem of our city. We still need to consider other things,” Panabang added.

The traffic chief recommended earlier for the City Council to come up with an ordinance indicating official activities of Baguio City in order for the TEU to make adjustments as to when the central business district will be closed to traffic.
