KENNON Road will remain closed to traffic until Task Force Kennon finished its re-inspection.

Admiral Albert Mogol, Office of the Civil Defense Cordillera regional director, said the temporary closure is to ensure no traffic accident will occur especially with the occasional rain showers in the afternoon.

“As of this time, we are still assessing the situation of Kennon Road and after our reassessment meeting with Phivolcs, Department of Public Works and Highways, and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau. We will then issue an advisory if we are to open this to traffic during the weekends,” Mogol said. Mogol, who also chairs the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).

Despite the inconvenience to motorists going up to Baguio City, Mogol added CDRMMC still puts premium on the safety of the riding public who are at risk from possible landslides along the historic route.

The CDRRMC chair added they consider opening Kennon Road for the May 13 synchronized midterm national and local elections to transport election paraphernalia to the different voting precincts along Kennon Road.

“We are considering it but then, that would still depend on what the CDRRMC will decide after our reassessment meeting of Task Force Kennon,” Mogol said.

Mogol, meanwhile, advised the public to expect afternoon rains for the whole month of May based on the latest weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

“We will continue to experience isolated thunderstorms here in the region brought about by the easterly winds which induces the cumulus clouds that’s why areas in the high mountain ranges are very prone to isolated thunder storms”, Mogol added.
