MOTORISTS’ safety traversing Buhagan (Bokawkan) Road is now being taken into consideration by the Baguio City Council.

Baguio City Councilors Benny Bomogao and Edgar Avila have filed resolutions proposing solutions to the worsening state of the main road is being made.

In his resolution, Bomogao asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to help assess the safety of the road as well as come up with remedial measures to assure safety for motorists.

Avila's resolution directs the Traffic Management Bureau (TMB) of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) to reroute heavily loaded six wheeler and cargo trucks on Buhagan to Magsaysay Ave., from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily.

A massive accident occurred on May 23, when a 10-wheeler truck rammed into 11 vehicles, adding to the list of mishaps that occurred in the area.

“For the nth time, accidents causing damage to property and injuries to life and limb has so often occurred at Buhagan (Bokawkan) Road. The major cause of which are mechanical failures, driver’s error unfamiliar terrain or overloading by six wheeler and above cargo trucks. The time is ripe to take immediate action to curb a clear and present danger brought about by the unregulated and unsupervised travel of these heavily loaded cargo trucks,” Avila said.

A 90-day trial period is being proposed and if it finds the scheme necessary, reasonable and viable solution to prevent further loss of life, limb and property, the rerouting scheme would be made permanent.

Bomogao, who chairs of the committee on public utilities, transport and traffic legislation, said police reports show reckless imprudence is the top cause of incidents in the city and it is time for experts to come in and help the city.

Both moves will be taken up in next week’s council session.
