BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan is set to have a dialog with Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan for the city’s Engineered Sanitary Landfill.

Domogan said talks with the chief executive will begin in a bid to utilize the land given to the city by Benguet Corporation for its sanitary landfill.

“The area is a private property of the Benguet Corporation and is not the property of the municipality of Itogon,” Domogan said.

Domogan said Benguet Corporation recently signed an agreement allowing free use of a 24.1-hectare area of the company’s titled property in Antamok, Itogon and whatever fees may incurred must be paid to the municipality instead.

The city sees the area as an answer to the need to have a sanitary landfill and stop hauling garbage.

Hauling, though expensive, has been identified by the Environment and Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as an acceptable means of disposal for areas which can afford the service and is still without a landfill.

Previously, Benguet Corporation pledged 24.11 hectares but had an existing body of water within the 300-meter limitation set by the environment department pushing the management of the mining company to expand the area.

During an inter-agency inspection, 5.11 hectares was added to be able to pass National solid Waste Management Commission criteria.
