2 peasant leaders shot by gunmen in Bukidnon

A 42-YEAR-OLD businessman was killed while his female companion was wounded after a motorcycle-riding gunmen attacked them while inside their store in Sitio Kasilaan, Barangay Halapitan in San Fernando, Bukidnon, Friday night, August 2.

The human rights group Karapatan claimed the two victims were members of Kasama-Bukidnon, the provincial chapter of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP).

Police identified the victims as Guillermo Casas and Jocelyn Laurete, 45, both residents of Sitio Nala in Barangay Halapitan.

Initial investigation showed that Casas sustained two gunshot wounds on the neck and right arm. He was rushed to the hospital but he did not get there alive.

Laurete, who was hit on her right leg, is now undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Police said the victims were inside the store when the gunman armed with a caliber 45 pistol shot them at close range.

Investigators said the gunman was with four other companions who were all wearing bonnets.

Authorities are still investigating the incident to determine the motive of the killing. (Alwen Saliring)
