CHO: Heart attack is leading cause of death in CDO

HEART attack or myocardial infarction was the leading cause of death in Cagayan de Oro in 2020, according to the City Health Office (CHO).

The CHO's data showed that 833 deaths recorded in the city were due to heart attacks.

Next to stroke, cancer of all forms was the second leading cause of mortality in 2020, followed by pneumonia (644), chronic hypertensive cardiovascular disease (520), cerebrovascular disease or stroke (407), diabetes mellitus (272), vehicular accidents (177), Covid-19 infection (149), chronic kidney disease (133), and acute coronary syndrome (103).

"Nakita nato nga most of the reason ngano nangamatay are mga katong naa sa lifestyle-related diseases," Acting City Health Officer Dr. Lorraine Nery said.

In the 2019, pneumonia was the chief cause of death with 1,024 deaths. This was followed by heart attack (842), cancer of all forms (696), stroke (496), hypertensive cardiovascular disease (477), diabetes mellitus (324), vehicular accident (259), chronic kidney disease (147), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (122), and sepsis (109).
