DAVAO CITY -- It is Mary Joy Tan’s turn to raise the banner of Cagayan de Oro as she pulled two gold medals in the 19th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships 16-under girls rapid event on Tuesday at the Royal Mandaya Hotel here.

The 15-year-old Tan, a pride of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, duplicated Ronald Canino’s double gold finish in the 16-under open classical standard event.

Tan landed in a three-way tie for first place alongside RP Age Group teammates Kylen Joy Mordido and Jarel Renz Lacamba with 5.5 points apiece, but all of them were awarded a gold medal each in the individual event.

On top of that, the three of them dominated the team event as they finished with a collective 16.5 points to take the gold in the team event and a 4-point margin against second placer Vietnam.

Lawrence Raphael Lawan and Maria Theresa Lumancas also bagged a silver medal each in the 8-under open and girls team event, respectively.

“Lawan is promising in his first outing kay top-5 siya ug bag-o pa gyud siya,” said Team CdeO over-all coach Johnnel Balquin.

Oro National Master Levi Mercado missed his way to the top as he just won the bronze medal in the 50-above men’s individual rapid event.

Mercado scored five points in seven rounds, and two of his losses were supposedly in winning position.

“Sayang akong mga pilde kay pulos winning. Ang usa quality up ug pait na kapildehan katong one piece up ko,” said Mercado.

All of Oro bets are vying for another medal hunt in the last event in the blitz category on Wednesday, June 27.
