BAGUIO CITY -- Cagayan de Oro’s taekwondo team continued to lead the city’s hunt for medals in Day 2 action, Tuesday of the 2017-2018 Batang Pinoy National Championships here.

As of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, Team CDO padded its medal count to four golds, two silvers and four bronzes.

This, after the pair of Andrei Jose Yucada and Janna Paculba bested their Pangasinan foes in three-straight sets, 11-7, 11-3, 11-6 to win the gold in table tennis cadet mixed doubles event.

The following day, the Oro jins took over again with a productive haul of two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

After Charisse Esclamado delivered the first gold for Team CDO, Harold Butaslac and Archiel Gumera followed suit, bagging the city’s third and fourth gold medals via lopsided wins in the finals.

Butaslac won over a Bacolod City bet, 10-4 in the cadet male flyweight category. While Gumera demolished Vren Sagalla, 27-7 in the cadet male lightweight final.

Arjon Bazar and Shane Mendeza dropped their final matches and settled for silver apiece in the male Jr. flyweight and female Jr. featherweight, respectively, while Marco Dedel and January Faith Gallego settled for a bronze each.

Already, Laizel Abucay, the 2016 BP National Championships gold medalist, assured the city of a silver as she was gunning for gold in the female Jr. lightweight category, as of Tuesday.

Mohammad Macatoon was also making his semifinal bout in the male Jr. middleweight division as of this writing.

Swimming’s Jay Lawson opened the second day with a bronze after finishing third place in the boys 12-under 200 meter backstroke.

Lawson, a grade 7 student of Xavier University High School, clocked 2 minutes, 44 seconds and 1 millisecond.

He was close to 8 seconds behind gold winner Kensaku Hatazawa of Dasmariñas City and almost 5 seconds off silver medalist Angelo Jose Tondo of Naga City.

On Monday, Charisse Esclamado of St. Mary’s School emerged as the city’s first gold taker after ruling the female cadet LTM category, while Kyle Canios bagged a bronze in the female cadet flyweight.
