Keep the sparkle

Monica R. Lopez

AN outfit isn’t complete without a piece or two of jewelry to add to the whole look. But like other things in life, there are rules when it comes to wearing jewelry. For all you know, you’ve been wearing it wrong. You would think, “Why bother?” That’s the frustrated part of you talking.

Here are some guidelines to consider because the last thing you want is to come out of the house not shining enough or looking like a walking jewelry store so bright you can be seen from space.

Wear accordingly

Think about what you’re doing for the day. Are you going to work, to a party or just keeping it casual? Look through your jewelry box and like your life, sort them out. You can go crazy with your jewelry selections when you’re at a party or go big during a black tie event--but not in a work setting (unless it’s mandated that you need to look sparkly to the nines). Stick to those that give off a classy and elegant touch without going overboard. In other words, downplay it.

Think about your neckline

Wearing a necklace (even earrings—but mostly necklaces) should complement your top’s neckline. You want your jewelry to emphasize the look further, the missing piece so to speak; not a distraction to the point that it should just be yanked from your neck. Apart from the internet, there are boutiques that display a chart that serves as a guide. Take notes.

Wear pieces that speak

And by speak, meaning pieces that speak of you and your personality. From your choice of music, your favorite food down to your fashion favorites—they’re a reflection of who you are and what you like. Choose pieces that best represent you. But at the same time, don’t close off on styles you haven’t tried. You never know, you might like them.

Mix and match

It’s not so much a rule; it’s more like a reminder. Back then, there were stricter rules about jewelry and how it should be matchy-matchy. That has slowly faded since part of wearing jewerly is having fun with it, so above all else, don’t be afraid to test out a lot to get the look you want. Stack rings, bracelets and necklaces. Mix metals and gemstones. Go nuts but again don’t overdo it.
