Second Cebu International Guitar Festival this September

Michael Rey M. Cortes

THERE is no doubt that Cebu can effortlessly charm tourists with its breathtaking scenery and undying culture. That said, various sectors have been doing their efforts to preserve the island’s genuine treasures.

In line with this, the Guitar Foundation of the Philippines is hosting its second Cebu International Guitar Music Festival on Sept. 6 to 8 at Robinsons Galleria Cebu and Summit Galleria Hotel. Guitar enthusiasts can expect a grander and bolder festival featuring an exciting set of lectures, workshops and concerts.

This year, the festival is themed “Kinablit”—which is one of the many traditional ways of playing a guitar. “Kinablit” was popularly used by Filipinos when guitars were first introduced in the Philippines. Sadly, this authentic tradition is on the verge of extinction, that’s why the Cebu International Guitar Music Festival aims to raise awareness.

One of the highlights of the festival is the “Guitar Making Workshop.” Get a chance to learn how to make a masterpiece guitar as led by Adolfo Toyoda. The workshop fee is P15,000 and includes the guitar kit and parts. Tools will be provided. Various lectures on all the things you need to know about guitars will also be led by different expert lecturers.

The Guitar Foundation of the Philippines Ensemble will also perform in concerts together with some of the big names who will be present during the three-day festival: Jose H. Valdez, Michael Dadap, Agustin Castilla-Avila, Angelito Agcaoili, Adolfo Toyoda Timuat, Ruben F. Reyes, Monching Carpio, Phil Valdez, and a whole lot more.
