Solon: Is a home gym worth it?

Pio Solon

WE GET this question a lot. With people looking to get to a healthier place during this pandemic, a home gym is worth considering. Some people have taken the plunge, while others are still sitting on the fence. Are home gyms worth it? Here are some pros and cons:

Saves on time but takes up space. You don’t have to drive to the gym anymore, and maybe there’s no need to shower. Ha! That in itself allows for time saved especially if the equipment you have at home is at par with a fitness gym. The only caveat is that it may eat up some of your home space. There is always a compromise.

You don’t get the social atmosphere of the gym. Let’s face it: We go to the gym to exercise and socialize. Training at home may work for introverted people, maybe not so for extroverts.

The investment can be significant at first. Home gyms, depending on how appointed you want them to be, can be of a significant cost. To get your return on investment you have to use it a lot for a long time! So if you’re not that committed to your exercise yet, you might want to hold off on that purchase. However, those who are more gung-ho will get a better return on their investment.

What equipment to put in? For people who love doing cardio, treadmills, rowing machines and the like work well. Those who are into strength training and weightlifting may want to have barbells and dumbbells. As I’ve learned to train more efficiently over the years, I swear by plyometrics and sprinting to maintain strength and improve on athletic abilities. Boxing is one way too, to improve cardio at home if you have limited space.

With home gyms, the bottom-line is that it doesn’t matter so much what equipment you use as long as you use it.

Happy training, guys!
