THE new building of the Cebu City Jail (CCJ) in Barangay Kalunasan now houses 421 inmates from the City of Naga Jail.

Councilor Dave Tumulak said the inmates arrived last Friday, Nov. 30.

The Naga jail management decided to temporarily move them to the CCJ following the discovery of tension cracks in the slope near the new penal facility in Barangay Naalad nearly two months after the landslide hit Barangay Tina-an last Sept. 20.

Of the 421 inmates, 34 are females and 387 are male.

Naga Jail Warden Roberto Crisanto Alpon III said a wall was built to separate male and female inmates.

Alpon said the inmates will be in CJJ while rehabilitation of the Naga facility, particularly slope stabilization activities, is ongoing.

However, work has yet to start as the City Government of Naga needs clearance to conduct civil work in the area.

If if its gets the clearance, Alpon said, the rehabilitation is expected to run between three and five months.

“We’re really thankful to those who helped us because supposedly, we’re going to use the old female dorm facility but Cebu City decided that we will use the new facility because it will be too complicated to use the old one because they need to transfer their inmates, too,” he said.

Bureau of Jail Management and Penology personnel in the City of Naga were also moved to the CCJ to secure the Naga inmates. RVC
