Councilor wants roads free of ‘spaghetti wires’

PEDESTRIANS and motorists, especially those driving large heavy equipment, will no longer have to worry about getting snagged by spaghetti wires and drop wires in Cebu City if the proposed ordinance regulating the installation of electrical posts and wires is approved.

Councilor Jerry Guardo, deputy mayor for infrastructure, said he will file a draft measure on the matter to address the danger and eyesore spaghetti wires impose.

“Right now, we have a spaghetti-wire eradication program and it’s short term. With this proposed ordinance, they (telecommunication and utility companies) will really have to comply,” he said.

Guardo wants to increase the standard height requirement for posts from 16 feet to 20 feet.

Along with this proposal is the suggestion to prohibit the installation of multi-posts in one area.

“I’ve noticed that in one corner, there are four to five posts occupying a space. As much as possible, there should only be one post, and all utilities will be assigned a specific line. In principle, the companies are agreeable,” Guardo said.

The councilor also wants to remove all wooden posts that have been in existence for the past 20 years because these are prone to decay compared to concrete ones.

For now, he said he will continue with the City’s spaghetti wires eradication program that is already nearing its completion.

Guardo said 50 percent of the Sinulog grand parade route is already fixed, and that they will finish first the uptown area before moving downtown. (RTF)
