A 48-year-old motorcycle-for-hire (habal-habal) driver died after his motorcycle was hit by a modernized passenger jeepney along the intersection of Rizal Street corner F. Del Rosario Street, in Barangay Poblacion, Talisay City, Cebu on late Sunday evening, July 3, 2022.

Staff Sergeant Carlos Dicdican from Talisay City Traffic Enforcement Unit identified the victim as Nicky Buenavista, of Bulacao, Pardo Cebu City.

Based in their investigation, Dicdican said that Buenavista was driving his Suzuki Smash motorcycle when he was hit by the Mango passenger jeepney (NES 6785) driven by Joel Simbanan upon reaching the intersection of Rizal Street corner F. Del Rosario Street, in Barangay Poblacion, Talisay City around 11:05 p.m. on Sunday.

Dicdican said that Simbanan, who hails from Barangay Cansojong, Talisay City, was heading towards Barangay Poblacion, when he and Buenavista entered the intersection resulting in the collision.

Dicdican said Buenavista and his motorcycle was pinned under the mini bus and dragged for several meters, resulting in his death.

"Makita gyud sa dash camera sa bus driver nga nilabang ni ang maong biktima ug pareho sad sila wala nag observe sa intersection mao ni resulta sa pagka-bangga (The dash camera of the bus driver shows that the victim crossed and they both did not observe (caution) at the intersection resulting in the collision)," Dicdican said.

The family of the victim, however, decided not to file a case against the bus driver as long as the latter would give financial assistance, including the burial expenses for Buenavista. (GDC, TPT)
