VICTORIA, Northern Samar (Updated) -- Three persons were killed and two were wounded when members of the New People's Army (NPA) attacked a police station in this town Thursday dawn, March 28.

The Police Regional Office (PRO) in Eastern Visayas reported that over 50 NPA rebels attacked the police station around 3:30 a.m.

The 15 police personnel assigned to the station, however, were able to position on the rooftop of the building when the rebels entered the area.

The policemen were led by Police Lieutenant Eladio Aro.

A gunfight ensued and lasted for three hours or around 6:40 a.m. Thursday.

Three NPA rebels were killed in the gunfight, while two policemen -- Police Senior Master Sergeant Arturo Gordo Jr. and Police Master Sergeant Arnold Cabacang -- were wounded.

Gordo was hit by shrapnel in the nose and eyes, while Cabacang sustained a minor injury in the face.

Several firearms, including one caliber M60, one M14 and two M16, were seized from the rebels.

The guerrillas were onboard a forward truck and were wearing military fatigues, and had their heads wrapped with yellow strips when they made the attack, reports said.

Among those who attacked were female members of the NPA.

PRO-Eastern Visayas spokesperson Police Lieutenant Colonel Ma. Delia Rentuya said PRO Regional Director Brigadier General Dionardo Carlos has directed his mobile forces to intensify the pursuit against the escaping rebels.

The PRO said Victoria town is under the jurisdiction of the Section Committee 2, Sub Regional Committee Emporium of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee led by Ranie Cabides. (JKDP/With Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo)
