Task group formed to solve cop's murder

A SPECIAL investigation task group (SITG) has been formed to solve the murder of Police Officer 2 Lord Romyth Cañada.

Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Visayas Debold Sinas said on Tuesday, November 20, that he appointed Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) Director Manuel Javier Abrugena as the supervisor of the investigators.

The SITG is composed of CPPO, Minglanilla Police Station, Regional Crime Laboratory, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Central Visayas and the intelligence unit.

Cañada, 38, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Barangay Calajoan, Minglanilla last Nov. 14. His brother-in-law Ken Echavez, 36, survived the incident after he sustained graze wounds on his brow and shoulder.

Sinas said investigators are looking into the possibility that the murder was related to Cañada's job and illegal drugs.

"We still have to establish the motive," he said.

The police official said there is no confirmation that Cañada had direct involvement in illegal drug trade.

Cañada was charged with administrative complaints for skipping a drug test.

Sinas said the victim's family can get the benefits as he was not killed in a police operation. (KAL)
