Tell it to SunStar: Keep the fire burning

CEBUANOS, particularly in Cebu City, are lucky to experience the long weekend since the holidays are just next to each other. However, we should not forget the values and morals that these holidays remind us of and not just the suspension of classes or work. It is to remind us about the rights and freedom that people have experienced, the fundamentals of society that historical events correctly implemented. Both Cebu City’s Charter Day and the People Power Edsa Revolution are not the end of one’s page. They are celebrations whose very beginnings should not be forgotten.

However, as what the writer George Orwell said, each generation is too assuming. It imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it. Don’t we know that because of those lessons in the past we are what we are now? In our society, every past generation contributed a lot to the present and the coming future, for it serves as a guide and a main foundation. Even these present days, we still tend to look back to the past to look for something valuable that can be used in these modern times and to contribute to what we will be in the future.

That’s the reason we commemorate the Cebu City’s Charter Day and specially Edsa People Power, because something in the past is already being repeated today. (By Jake Flourence Camasura)
