TWO Cebuanas reaped silver medals during the 1st Indonesia International Online Pencak Silat Championships held last Aug. 15 to 17.

Mariefe Hermosa, a senior high school student of Cebu Institute of Technology-University, and Bryza Dagno of Don Vicente Rama Elementary School, both placed second during the junior and pre-junior Jurus Tunggal (solo forms) event, respectively.

The competition, which was held during Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration, drew hundreds of participants from several countries, making it historic as it is the first Pencak Silat event done online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jasper Movilla, who served as head instructor for Cebu City’s Pencak Silat team, said he was confident that both delegates would get medals as they had made preparations for the tournaments despite the limitations brought about by the pandemic.

Pencak Silat is the national martial art and sport of Indonesia and is practiced worldwide. (JKV)
