Christmas away from home

Randie J. Comilang

CHRISTMAS in the Philippines is made special because of the traditional “Simbang Gabi” or Misa de Gallo, and eating Noche Buena with the family.

Filipinos are also dedicated with the food being prepared for the holidays like the Christmas ham, “Lechon baboy,” “kakanin,” and other Pinoy-inspired Christmas delicacies.

Despite the colorful light and the establishments that play Jose Mari Chan songs, some Filipinos working away from home tend to miss the Filipino Christmas vibes.

Joseph Roy P. Ganados, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) works in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia since 2016 as an event stylist under Zina Events.

Ganados said he pursued working in the Middle East to experience life as an OFW. His employer is the granddaughter of the late King Abdulaziz and he sees this as a good opportunity to enhance his portfolio as he is working for important people of Saudi Arabia.

Ganados added there's a huge difference when it comes to celebrating Christmas in Saudi Arabia and in the Philippines. There are neither Christmas symbols nor songs being played around since Christmas is not celebrated in Saudi.

“What I really miss about Christmas is the Simbang Gabi, attending Mass with my family, and having Noche Buena. I also miss the strong family bonding,” he said.

As for Pinoy Christmas food, Ganados said he really misses eating lechon baboy or any food with pork recipes.

Despite having Christmas parties at work, he said it still felt different because celebrating Christmas with family makes it the most exciting and memorable season of the year.
