RESPONDING to the needs of time brought by the evolution of today’s communication, the Holy Cross of Davao College now offers Bachelor of Arts in Communication, an upgraded version of its former course - AB in Mass Communication.

The change in the basic education curriculum gave birth to this new curriculum.

“When senior high school was introduced, higher education institutions are compelled to change the curriculum since there are general education (minor) subjects that were brought down to senior high school level,” Derf Hanzel Maiz, subject area coordinator of AB Communication, said.

The new curriculum of AB Communication of HCDC features three specializations: Journalism and Broadcasting; New Media Studies; and Social Communication.

Maiz shared that HCDC will be the first to offer such in Mindanao.

Students who want to pursue journalistic careers, the AB Communication Specializing in Journalism and Broadcasting degree can help one be above the competition with proper trainings and exposure.

Meanwhile, for those who want to explore computing, science, the humanities, and the visual and performing arts, the New Media Studies - a relatively young academic discipline - will allow students to master all these and beyond.

Lastly, the AB Communication Specializing in Social Communication highlights the relationship between message senders, media, and audiences. The curriculum said: It aims to understand and define communication strategies that can be applied in various fields of work, from selling a product to positioning a brand or designing a campaign including Church communication or media ministry.

Major subjects common to all specializations are Communication Theory; Communication Research; Risk, Disaster and Humanitarian Communication; Communication Media Laws and Ethics; Journalism Principles and Practices; Broadcasting Principles and Practices; Social Media Principles and Practices; Human Connectivity and Digital Citizenship; and Conflict Sensitive Journalism, among others.
