Dining across the runway

Reuel John F. Lumawag

AFTER a whole day of meetings, members of the SunStar Davao team were ready for some good food to cap off the night.

We decided to have dinner at Nanay Redecca’s Halal Barbecue and Restaurant in Mamay. For many Dabawenyos, you might be familiar with the Magallanes branch of the restaurant. This is a newly opened branch that offers more seats at an open-air restaurant.

For aviation geeks, you would love eating here as it is just across the runway of the Francisco Bangoy International Airport.

The restaurant was quite packed when we arrived but we were able to immediately get a table within minutes from when we entered the restaurant.

For dinner we ordered Chicken Barbecue, Kinilaw, Bihon, Kaldereta, and Tinolang Tuna Belly.

I enjoyed the Chicken Barbecue. The chicken was juicy and the glaze was sweet.

The Kalderata’s sauce was tasty. It was sweet and salty. I love that layer of flavor from the pineapples. However, I do find the goat meat to be quite tough.

I also enjoyed the Tinolang Tuna Belly. The soup was really flavorful and homey. However, I find that the tuna belly was quite dry.

The Bihon was also okay but not memorable. The Kinilaw was the only dish that I did not try because I avoid eating raw food.

The service we got was also pretty good. The food was served within 15 minutes.

The restaurant is great for families with their dishes being served family-style and the cooking being somthing reminiscent of the dishes you would enjoy at home. The restaurant is also Muslim-friendly.
