THE Department of Health (DOH)-Davao said a 25-day-old baby died on May 9 from coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and he was believed to be the youngest fatality so far in Davao Region.

Based on the Davao Center for Health Development Regional Situation Update on Covid-19 in Davao Region as of 5 p.m. Saturday, May 9, the baby was among the seven new confirmed cases from Davao City.

Davao City now has 177 Covid-19 cases.

With the recent death of the infant, Davao Region now has a death toll of 22.

The DOH-Davao data also showed that the baby was from Barangay 23-C, Davao City, one of the areas in the city that has an increasing number of Covid-19 cases.

The baby manifested signs and symptoms on May 6 and died on May 9. Health authorities have yet to determine how the baby was infected with the virus.

According to Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) chief Dr. Leopoldo Vega, the baby was born on April 13 at their hospital with no fetomaternal complications.

The baby was discharged after 24 hours of life on April 14. However, the baby was admitted to their hospital on May 7 after episodes of loose bowel movement (LBM) and fever.

"[There is] Covid cases in their area with overcrowding," Vega said.

The baby stayed in the hospital for a day but eventually died.

On their final diagnosis, the baby suffered septic shock secondary to neonatal sepsis, neonatal pneumonia, acute gastroenteritis with severe dehydration, multiple electrolyte imbalance plus Covid-19.

Last week, DOH-Davao reported three infants, including a six days old, two months old, and four months old, who were admitted at SPMC after they tested positive for novel Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the strain of coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

Earlier, Vega said that all three other patients were in a stable condition.
