Cayetano ‘frustrated’ over rejection of proposed divorce bill

IF GIVEN the chance to be back in the Senate, Taguig City Representative Pia Cayetano said she will still push for the divorce bill which was rejected in the Senate last March 2018.

“Ginawa ko na sa House, bakit hindi ko gagawin sa Senate? You can expect me to be consistent. Yun lang naman ako,” Cayetano told reporters Saturday, January 12, on the sidelines of 4th Pinay in Action (PIA) Cup football tournament at Tionko field, Barangay 76-A, Matina, Davao City.

She, however, admitted being frustrated with the Senate’s lack of support and consideration on the institutionalization of divorce in the country.

“I’m very sad na hindi ‘yan inaksyonan ng Senate. I’m sad to know that they did not even bother to have a hearing which I believe, with all due respect to my colleagues, sana naman binigyan ng kahit konting panahon for hearing,” she said.

March 19 of last year, while the House of Representatives passed the House Bill 7303 or the proposed measure seeking to institutionalize absolute divorce and dissolution of marriage, the Senate did not support the bill.

“I am not pushing it for everyone. Of course not! I am a believer of the sanctity of the family but there are very abusive relationships that are in need of a legal measure that would protect and help them,” she said.

Cayetano added the Senate should have seen the need of the policy as it will affect the society. (LHC)
