TAGUM CITY -- After a gold medal from arnis anyo player Anton Razy Fujita, overall defending champion Davao City collected two more golds in taekwondo and another one in dancesport in the ongoing Batang Pinoy 2019 Mindanao Qualifying Leg as of Tuesday noon, February 5.

Davao City jins John Louis Zaballero and Arnold Alesna, Jr. pocketed the kyorugi cadet boys bantamweight and featherweight golds, respectively.

Zaballero defeated Cagayan de Oro's Emmanuel Paul Borja in the finals. The latter settled for silver while General Santos City's Carl Jester Paquit and Cabadbaran's Kevin Sean Macasocol each got a bronze.

Alesna, for his part, outclassed his teammate Kurt Sebastian Velchez in their gold match.

Alesna, 12, a Batang Pinoy first timer, said it was an advantage to know how his teammate plays.

“Kabalo nako sa iyang dula, wala man ko maglisod. Seryoso man among dula, walay atik-atik. Gidula jud namo (I already know his brand of game, it was easy. We took the game seriously though. We really played our best),” he said in an interview with SunStar Davao on the sidelines of the taekwondo competition at Gaisano Mall Tuesday.

The team cadet of Leannah Angela Hernandez, Janine Cambonero and Nicole Kate Hernandez annexed a silver while Hernandez copped two more bronzes in cadet female individual and pair cadet with Jumari Carl Caybot.

Meanwhile, Davao City's dancesports team accounted for one gold, three silvers and three bronzes at the RDR Gym, Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex late Monday evening, February 4.

The pair of Sam Ashlee Cameros and Precious Hanna Hecale clinched a gold in juvenile c standard event to outclass two Kidapawan City tandems who grabbed the next two spots.

The silvers were courtesy of Cameros-Hacale (juvenile A standard), Frederick John Monterde and Allysa Karel Piquero (junior A standard) and Macarimbang-Catamco (juvenile D standard) while Chester Patt Herrera and Francheska Darvin (juvenile D standard), Oliver Andrei Tangara and Bernadette Grace Daquipil (junior c standard) and Nur-Jey Macarimbang and Joelie Mae Catamco (juvenile A standard) salvaged bronzes.

At the Bulwagang Pangkarunungan, Davao City chesser Ryan Gabriel Rasay copped a bronze in rapid boys 13-15 event.
