SAINT Mary's College (SMC) of Tagum and Crossing Bayabas National High School (CBNHS) captured the boys and girls titles, respectively, of the recently-concluded Escandor Cup three-point shootout finals held at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.

SMC edged Bernardo Carpio National High School (BCNHS), 6-5, in their championship match. The boys category attracted a total of 23 teams.

SMC coach Phil Jimena, in a phone interview yesterday, said they didn't expect to play in the shootout tournament as they earlier prepared for a 4-on-4.

"May dalawang phases pa kaming dinaanan bago pa umabot sa finals. May five players pero apat ang nakalaro," Jimena said, adding that the titular game was the toughest for his team that was composed of Edchel B. Janio, Jenzel Hanz E. Calo, Allan Lance Mantalaba, Jerome E. Paraon and Calvin Nacario.

He cited their finals rival as "all shooters."

He also thanked the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) under regional director Glenn Escandor for putting up a new league.

He added, "Maganda, bago sya. May makita kaming part sa shootout na pwedeng iapply sa 5-on-5."

Meanwhile, CBNHS outlasted Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School (Dranhs), 5-3, in the girls finals clash.

CBNHS was bannered by Krystelle Agang, Aiedie Mie Homoc, Erika Inot, Charlyn Vismanos and Jean Pauline Amargo.

The champion teams claimed P1,500 while the second and third placers took home P1,000 and P500, respectively.
