ILOILO City Councilor Joshua Alim said on Tuesday, January 29, that the new grandstand should be properly named through an ordinance.

The establishment of an ordinance will officially name and impose a regulation on the use of grandstand to avoid obstructions like traffic congestion, he added.

“There was already an existing before, sa (on the) old freedom,” Alim added.

Under the Republic Act 1209 in 1995 or the “Iloilo City Freedom Law” penned by the late Mayor Rodolfo Ganzon, it provides the freedom of the Ilonggos to select the leaders of the city.

Recently, Mayor Jose Espinosa III said that he plans to temporarily rename the new grandstand to Iloilo City Dinagyang Grandstand to highlight the Dinagyang Festival.

Alim said that the official name of the new grandstand will permit the activities to be held in the area and to recognize its operation.

“Like napaminsar (think) ko, anybody can have a rally on that. Peaceful rally, so way na kinahanglanon (needed) permit because that is Freedom Grandstand,” he said.

The councilor did not expressed opposition against Espinosa’s name proposal, however, the council will analyze the proposal since it will be passed under their authorization. (Carolyn Jane Abello)
