Jun N. Aguirre

THE Sangguniang Bayan of Makato, Aklan on Friday, October 29, 2021, placed the town under a state of calamity due to strong rains.

Neli Dela Cena, former vice mayor and incumbent councilor, said they were supposed to declare it a few days ago but was delayed at the request of the municipal mayor.

The decision to declare the town under a state of calamity was due to the series of strong rains the town has experienced since last week.

According to the consolidated report of the Makato Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, around P5 million of government infrastructure, P127 million worth of damage in both the agriculture and the fishery sector and at least 3,000 residents have been affected by rains brought by the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone.

The decision to declare the state of calamity was meant to pave the way to helping affected residents cope with the said incident. (SunStar Philippines)
