THERE will be no displacement of vendors in the improvements of district markets in Iloilo City.

This is the assurance of Mayor Jerry Treñas after he met with the markets in charge and presidents of the vendors association to present the rehabilitation of the public markets through Public and Private Partnership (PPP).

“Once our markets have improved, this will help our vendors be competitive against supermarkets in malls. No legitimate market vendors will be displaced as based to the project’s terms of reference (TOR),” Treñas said.

Additional stalls may also be expected since the markets will be made spacious for the vendors and consumers.

Private investors SM Development Corporation and Metro Pacific have conveyed interest in the redevelopment of Central and Terminal Public Markets.

Arevalo, Jaro and La Paz Public Markets will be developed by City Government.

The rehabilitation aims to help and improve the income of the market vendors, and to provide the city with a sustainable multi-use market complex.

Architect Regina Gregorio presented the design proposals with provisions for parking area for cars and motorcycles at the second floor of each market, elevator and comfort rooms. (PR)
