THE Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) released on Friday, November 23, the short list of the candidates for the Chief Justice post vacated by Teresita Leonardo-de Castro.

Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio , Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Estela Perlas-Bernabe, and Andres Reyes Jr are included in the short list.

Carpio and the first three Associate Justices got 6 points, while Reyes got 5 points from the Judicial and Bar Council.

The President is mandated under the Constitution to choose from the short list the new Chief Justice within 90 days of the vacancy.

Leonardo-De Castro was named Chief Justice last August. She sat as Chief Justice for only two months and retired last October 10 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

Leonardo-De Castro replaced former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, who was ousted tgrough a quo warranto petition.

To recall, the SC ousted Sereno over the latter's failure to submit her Statement of Assets Liabilities and Networth. (SunStar Philippines)
