AMID looming threats of violent extremism and transnational crimes, Rodrigo Duterte has pledged to boost the defense and security cooperation between the Philippines and Malaysia.

Duterte made the commitment during his meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, July 16, Malacañang said.

This was the first meeting between Duterte and Mahathir.

The Palace said Duterte expressed gratitude to Mahathir for inviting him for a dialogue that focused on "matters of mutual interest."

It added that the two leaders reaffirmed the "long-standing brotherhood and friendship" between the two nations.

"President Duterte pointed out the need to address terrorism and violent extremism in the region, as well as transnational crime[s] such as piracy and armed robbery at sea and the illegal drug trade," it said in a press statement.

"President Duterte likewise renewed the commitment to further strengthen defense and security cooperation at the bilateral and regional level," it added.

Malacañang said Duterte also extended to Mahathir his appreciation for Malaysia’s sustained support for the quest for just and lasting peace and development in Mindanao.

It said Duterte and Mahathir also took note of the importance of working closely together as two nations and as members of Southeast Asian bloc "to achieve shared aspirations of greater peace, progress and prosperity for the Philippines and Malaysia, and greater stability and security in the region."
