A MAGNITUDE 6.1 earthquake hit Calatagan, Batangas on Sunday morning, May 22, 2022, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the tectonic earthquake was recorded 18 kilometers off the coast of Calatagan around 5:50 a.m. with 122 kilometers depth.

It said Intensity 4 was felt in Calatagan; Intensity 3 in the cities of Quezon, Pasay and Pasig in the National Capital region, Tagaytay City, the towns of Mendez, Amadeo and Alfonso in Cavite and Obando, Bulacan.

Intensity 2 was felt in Abucay, Bataan; Gapan City, Nueva Ecija; Castillejos, Zambales; cities of Manila, Mandaluyong and Makati and Tanay Rizal.

In a radio interview, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said the earthquake is less likely to be felt because it was deep but damage and aftershocks may be expected.

Ishmael Narag, officer-in-charge of the Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring division of Phivolcs, said the sliding of Eurasian Plate against the Manila Trench may have been the cause of the quake.

He said no tsunami is expected to occur after the quake.

Authorities have yet to receive reports regarding damage or casualties of the quake. (SunStar Philippines)
